Hawaiian Lionfish

The Hawaiian Lionfish can be seen quietly drifting along the reef. This variety of lionfish is endemic to Hawaii and can only be found here.

It is beautiful to look at but don't touch. Their feather like spines on its back can be used to inject a powerful venom which causes a painful sting.

The Hawaiian Lionfish feeds at night. It uses its pectoral fins to herd its prey to an enclosed area. It then uses a suck and gulp action to eat its food alive.
